  1. Excellent Training Tool 5 Star Review

Posted by on 17th Feb 2017

I recently bought the Kickr (new 2016) from 65. First, the service was excellent. The product was personally delivered by Raynen from 65 to my home on time. Raynen spent a while discussing the product as well as the sports community in SG. So, basically great service.

As for the product, it has a bit of a learning curve, and if you plan to use something like Trainer Road with it you need to be aware that you will have to buy additional items to allow communication with whichever computer/ipad/android operating system you are planning to use. You must take your existing training equipment into consideration. For example, I have a Garmin 520 with heart rate strap and cadence sensor but they are only ANT+ compatible. While I can use the Kickr with my Garmin via the ANT+ signal, I cannot directly pair my Kickr and my Garmin heart rate and cadence monitor to my computer/ipad, etc. I had to buy an expensive (100+ SGD) ANT+ USB adapter to attain compatibility. Another course you can go is to by the Wahoo heart rate strap and use the bluetooth signal with your computer/ipad, etc., but it will also incur an additional cost. The Kickr does come with a cadence sensor, but it does not include a heart rate strap.

Another situation to note is that the new Kickr only comes with an 11 speed cassette. If you are planning on using an 11 speed bike with it, great, no problem. But if you are going to use the older 10 speed drivetrain, then you must be prepared to change the Kickr's cassette. This is easy to do, but note you need to purchase a cassette as well as a chain whip, wrench, and a cassette tool. Or, you can simply get your local bike store to change the cassette for you when you buy the new cassette for the Kickr, but remember the Kickr is cumbersome and you will have to take it with you to the store. This thing is not light.

As for the products performance, it has been excellent. I particularly enjoy ERG mode. It simplifies the training and forces me to maintain both a high cadence and a consistent power output. Originally I trained using my Garmin 520 and I re-rode previous routes on the Kickr, which is nice. You can compete with your virtual self and it makes for a good training session. Climbs, etc., are simulated very well.

However, since getting Trainer Road I have loved the Kickr. I highly recommend at least trying Trainer Road for yourself. Because I use the Garmin cadence sensor and heart rate monitor I bought the ANT+ USB stick for my old Windows 7 computer and thus far I have had only a positive experience.

One problem I have had with the Kickr is calibration. I believe this should be noted because calibration is key. To achieve a power reading which accurately accounts for your power input, you must be calibrated. I believe the manual states a calibration should be run every couple of weeks, depending on your riding frequency. As I said, I have had trouble with my calibration. While calibrating the Kickr on Trainer Road has not been difficult, calibrating the Kickr with the Kickr app has not worked. To calibrate you spin up to approximately 24mph and then let the Kickr free-spin itself back to 0. As simple as that sounds, it actually doesn't seem to work. I never get a message from the Wahoo app verifying that my Kickr has been properly calibrated.

The calibration process via Trainer Road is virtually identical, only a slight speed variation, but unlike with the Wahoo app, I do receive confirmation of a completed calibration from the Trainer Road program.

Ok, the point is the Kickr has been a great training tool for me. Coupled with the computer program, I expect to make gains in my cycling ability. I also like that it keeps me out of the SG traffic. Often the traffic and roads here can be stressful and I feel like I have to either go out very early or late to reduce the car stress. With the Kickr I can ride whenever I want.

For some background I've owned a magnetic wheel driven trainer as well as rollers. Rollers are great. Lots of fun and good for practicing control. I also think they have their place alongside the Kickr as a training tool. However, comparing the Smart Kickr trainer to a magnetic trainer is not a fair challenge. Though the magnetic trainer is considerably less expensive, the experience of training with the Kickr is absolutely superior.

Thanks for reading and I hope it helps.
